Beyond the Vet Tech Program: Stay Professionally Involved

As a practicing veterinary technician, or as a student in a vet tech degree program, it can be immensely beneficial and enjoyable to be an active member of a professional association for vet techs or other professionals who work with animals.

Professional membership will increase your presence in the vet tech profession, lead you to meeting fellow colleagues and potential employers, keep you posted on the latest developments in veterinary medicine, and provide ideas and tips for your job search and continuing education.

Here are prominent national associations for veterinary professionals:

  • American Association for Laboratory Animal Science: This association is for veterinary workers such as veterinary technicians and animal care technicians who work in laboratory settings and are responsible for the care, management, and/or study of animals. Online vet tech courses are offered as part of their continuing education for practicing vet techs. Annual membership dues range from $35 to $180 for US residents.
  • American Humane Association: The AHA offers professional membership to people who work in animal welfare, offering information to animal care professionals on the latest research and training opportunities relevant to their work. Individual membership is $59 per year.
  • Association of Zoo Veterinary Technicians: This association is for those vet techs who work in zoo medicine and are interested in and dedicated to conservation. Individual membership is $35 per year, and vet tech students can become subscribers for only $17 per year.
  • National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America: This association is open to anyone in the veterinary profession, including vet tech students. It aims to promote and affect the future of the veterinary technician profession and provides numerous continuing education opportunities. Individual membership is $50 per year, and vet tech students can join for only $25 per year.
